Black onyx is a variety of chalcedony, a type of microcrystalline quartz. It is characterised by its deep black colour, unlike other types of onyx that show banding or layered patterns, like Sardonyx which has white and brown bands. 

Where is it found?

Black onyx is quite common and can be found in various locations across the globe, including Brazil, Uruguay, India, and the United States.

How tough is it?

6.5 / 7 on the Mohs scale. Black onyx is relatively resistant to scratches and can withstand daily wear. However, it can be scratched by harder minerals or rough surfaces.
