THE THRIFT STORE SISTERS (AND BONEARROW’S BEZZIES), FELICITY AND JOHANNA BRAS, ON THEIR PERSONAL STYLES, FAVOURITE JEWELLERY PIECES AND PERSONAL STYLE ICONS...
You both have very different personal styles. How would you describe each others?
F: We do have very different styles but surprisingly we borrow from each others wardrobes a lot, we just style the same pieces very differently. Joh’s quite grungy, unkept, bed-head kind of style, definitely elements of rock and roll/groupie. She has a relaxed style, quite bohemian really.
J: Felicity follows trends, but more in popular culture than in fashion. She’s very influenced by the past, especially the 60’s french style, but also a 70’s California vibe. She has classic staples in her wardrobe, like a breton top but she puts her own spin on things. A bit of Jane Birkin with some Francoise Hardy thrown in.
Do you find it hard to buy for other people, for a certain customer on your boutique? Or do you just buy the things you like?
J: It’s a mix of both.
F: Yeah definitely a mixture. We’d never put anything on the boutique we don’t like.
J: Yeah sometimes you have to take your personal style out of the equation and imagine the person you’re buying for. I might pick something out and think Felicity would look amazing in it, or a certain type of girl, but that might not necessarily be my style.
Does anything ever not make it into the boutique and end up in your wardrobes?
J: Not as much as you’d think though, if we kept as much as we wanted there would be much less stock on the boutique! But somethings definitely steal out hearts!
What are your favourite pieces of jewellery you own? Do you have pieces you wear everyday?
F: I have very little jewellery, mostly rings, but what I do have I wear pretty much everyday. Generally it’s the same 2 rings that I’ve worn for the past 5 years, one I got in California that I love mainly because I have such good memories of the trip.
J: I’m super fussy with jewellery, I’m not a high street jewellery shopper. I don’t have a massive collection but when I do buy something I’ll wear it all the time. Rings and earrings are my thing. I have a skull ring from San Diego that's one of my favourites.
Are there any items you have that mean a lot to you?
F: I don’t have anything of great value, I wouldn’t spend a huge amount on a piece, but my bonearrow bonded ring that you gave me a few years ago I never take off, it’s travelled the world with me!
J: I’m not so sentimental with jewellery, I don’t have anything precious, I’d be too worried about losing it! But I do feel like my jewellery is a part of me that I feel a bit lost if I don’t wear them.
